This lecture will examine the origins of the Royal Academy and how its constitution and system of governance, as demonstrated by the original Instrument of Foundation, relate to those of other learned societies, including the Royal Society and the Society of Antiquaries.   It will include a detailed discussion of the original circumstances of foundation and of the ideas and beliefs of those involved, including George III, Sir Joshua Reynolds, the first President, and Sir William Chambers, who became Treasurer.
