This lecture will aim to sketch the background to the formation of the Learned Societies that currently inhabit the Burlington Courtyard, along with some of those that previously did. Whilst subsequent lectures will focus primarily on the history and achievement of the individual societies, I hope to give a sense of the temper of the times of their origination, their increasing professionalisation over the subsequent centuries, and their potential role in helping us confront an increasingly difficult future.
- Speaker: Lord May is former Government Chief Scientific Advisor and Past-President of the Royal Society
