The Geological Society of London was founded by 13 signatories on Friday the 13 November, 1807. Despite this cabalistic-sounding beginning, the Society has since taken a leading role in debunking myths about the history of our species and the planet that gave us birth. Formed by secession from the Royal Society, the Geological Society remains an active and popular national Society, by far the largest in Europe, and with a strongly international Fellowship. However it finds itself fighting battles today that are not that dissimilar to those that fought by the Royal Society’s redoubtable Secretary, Sir Joseph Banks, when he opposed the formation of the Society 200 years ago.
- Speaker: Dr Ted Nield is Editor of Geoscientist and former Chairman of the Association of British Science Writers
